our Suppliers: Bluebird Tea Co.

You may have read our blog post featuring our friend Nia - the creative florist who designs our beautiful Living Wall under the guise of her luvshifting brand. In the next instalment of our 'Meet our Suppliers' series we had a chat with the lovely team at Bluebird Tea Co.

We have always sourced excellent teas to serve to you alongside our coffees. Single estate and classic teas such as Yunnan Black or Hubei cloud green are sourced from Waterloo Tea based in Cardiff, and recently we added blends by tea mixologists Bluebird to our range.

When we discovered Bluebird Tea Co. it was clear from the beginning that they ticked all our boxes. They have a deep rooted passion for producing outstanding and modern unique blends, and we knew we would be able to treat you to a fantastically diverse range of teas. Two of our absolute favourites are their Cherry Lips green tea and their Rhubarb and Custard rooibos blend. So here is their story...

A small selection of the extensive range

After meeting at university, company founders Krisi and Mike launched Bluebird Tea Co. in 2013. Over the last 3 years they have become recognised as an award winning, unique Tea Mixology Company, who now have stores in Brighton, Tunbridge Wells and Bristol. Wholesale Manager Hikaru was kind enough to spare us a few minutes to tell us a little more about the company.

How big is the current team and what are the different areas of the business?

We’ve grown loads over the last 12 months. It’s funny to think... 6 of us working from the Brighton store to nearly 30 now. We have three main parts of the business; the stores, online and wholesale. Throughout all three of these areas we focus on giving customers an easy and amazing experience, where they can have a bit of fun, as well as learning about tea.

Where do Bluebird Tea Co see themselves in 10 years?

We’ve been lucky enough to have such a loyal following of tea-loving fans since we first opened our doors in Brighton two years ago. We’re always coming up with new ideas for exciting blends, and we’d love to have more stores across the UK to be able spread the love even more, one cuppa at a time.

One of the special teas we featured for a limited time- zesty, zingy green tea Hot Mama Jama packs a spicy, chilli kick balanced with warming lemongrass and fruity apple, passion fruit, lime and mango pieces. Incredibly popular and super tasty!

What is the proudest achievement of the company so far?

For Mike and Krisi, the co-founders, it’s opening their first store in Brighton’s iconic North Laine. After attending a food fair around the corner, they saw a record store (Borderline Records) that was closing it’s doors after decades of serving the local community. Shortly after, we opened up our first shop to the public, taking them on a tea filled journey.

For myself as the Wholesale Manager it would have to be seeing all of our happy and enthusiastic wholesale customers being so passionate about our teas when serving them to their own customers. It’s so satisfying to walk around Brighton and see so many of our friends with their great businesses, serving our teas (and of course you guys over at Southsea!).

If you can choose, what is your favourite tea?

My all time favourite Bluebird Tea Co tea is Skinny Minny. I’m a total health nut and eat really clean foods. So I drink lots of cups of it, due to the detoxifying proper’TEAS’ of the Pu’erh, which is an aged tea. It also has fennel, which is shown to aid digestion, so it’s great after a meal.

If your Tea Mixologists could produce a blend for any celebrity who would it be for and what blend would they create, and why?

I’m really into movies and have been a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio for a while, so I think we’d have to make a blend for him (great work on The Revenant). I’d create a blend called Chai-tanic, which would be a black tea, with mint, juniper and peppercorns (I’m a sucker for gin, so I think all teas I make are a little tainted by that).

If you haven't experienced a Bluebird brew yet, have a chat with one of the team next time you pop in and we can help you choose a blend that is sure to be just your cup of tea (sorry, couldn't resist!). You can stock up your own tea cupboard and find out more about this wonderful company on their website www.bluebirdteaco.com
